AT last, common sense has prevailed (“Subjects fine-tuned as schools go back to basics”, 13/10). Something had to be done about declining literacy and numeracy standards and the Wiltshire-Donnelly review findings are addressing that. With Australia’s eight different school administrations, and the ever-increasing variations in curriculum and teaching requirements caused by that, a back-to-basics approach is not only welcome, it is needed. But changing the national curriculum is one thing. Flowing it through to the classroom and teacher training will take time, money and persistence. Hopefully that has been factored into the...
