MARK COLVIN: A leading literacy academic says the debate about student performance is missing a fundamental point. The release last night of the latest international education rankings showed a slide in the performance of Australian students in reading, science and maths. That prompted a flurry of commentary about school funding, teacher quality and the curriculum. But Stewart Riddle of the University of Southern Queensland says the real revelation is the degree of inequity in Australia education.
